So ya I decided to redesign randombrad.com on my days off last week. Alot has happened since I last wrote. I am at a point now that I feel like I am used to living here at the camp. Also there has been a wonderful woman in my life. She makes me smile. and helps me be pointed back to the cross.
Tonight I had an interesting opportunity to witness. I wasn’t planning on, but you know when God gives ya the words just do it.
here is video that I took today before they pave over the road. The road was under construction for a week and then Honda shot a commercial for the Honda civic. But they are suppose to pave over it tomorrow because of the noise that the neighbors have been frustrated with.
I went to church today and they had a potluck. I made Betty Crocker brownies from a box. But I felt like I needed to make the brownies a little special. So I took a big symphony milk chocolate and pounded it with a hammer and then put the broken peices of it ontop of the brownie batter. They turned out pretty good.
So today I went and had my first SMOG test. It was pretty harmless, My blazer passed really well the guy said. So then I continued onto the Lancaster AAA where they were able to save me time in the long run, because I would have had to gone to the BMV several times which word on the street takes a long time. So after I was done there I was headed to Wal-Mart to get some things, I saw haircuts for 3 dollars and 50 cents. I was like Its getting hot out might as well get a hair cut. The girl that cut my hair at the beauty school told me she was here first guy hair cut. Then I got a txt from a counselor from last year that she was having a going away party in Santa Clarita. So I drove there via two canyons. I was very curvey and can be intense at times for a guy from indiana. But I made it there and it was great to see her again before she goes away to college. Then on the way back I decided to fully use the GPS unit I got last week by going on a fire road that i saw on the map. I had heard of one that when to the oaks from the old paintball feild. i tried to fins it from the other end but ended up probably 5-7 miles around a winding dirt road until it dead ended. oops.
I made it back alright obviously. I’m working some adventure tommorrow for Fresno Family camp here at THE OAKS.
So the summer is finished as far as camps go. We had our celebration party at Santa Monica which also happened on my 23 birthday. I was able to go skim boarding and that was alot of fun. Then on that sunday at 2am a few of us went with Dan H. to reserve a camping spot at Jalama Beach north of Santa Barbra. We literally camped within 300 feet of the beach. I fell asleep on the beach and got a pretty nice sun burn but its all better now. Then We cam back on that Tuesday around noon. On Wed. Jimmy and I moved into the white trailer. Its looking pretty nice. I have a small bed room but with a sink and a half bathroom off of my room. The living area seems to be big enough for us. I’m slowly getting into the hang of things with my job but it is so-real actually being in my real job. Today I drove up a fire road to get some cool footage of the camp from really far away. It will be worked into a video that I have to have ready for the Sept 14th dedication of the new buildings here at THE OAKS.
I’m doing well. Sorry I have been slow to respond to things, its just when I am 3 hours different than the midwest and I don’t get off until 5pm and still have to eat dinner. Things can be difficult. We are still working on getting internet in the white trailer.
There was a 5.4 Earthquake that some people felt today in California. I was at the lake and had just gotten up from sitting on a rock when 3 s that were laying on the beach felt the earthquake. The link below shows the epicenter. I am about 30 mins west of Lancaster to get perspective as to where I am in relationship to the earthquake. I didn’t even notice it.
Things are still going strong with Senior High camp.
I was sick Wednesday evening, with the 24 hour flew. It started around 6:30 PM when I was running the projector; I got a really bad headache and started to feel clammy. And Lauren the camp nurse said that I had a low grade fever. So Wed. night I had to sleep in the infirmary. It was a great way to get a sound sleep. I felt really bad thought that I was letting everyone down by not being able to go to work this morning. I think there was about 4-5 people effected by me not being able to work.
I am feeling much better. I ended up working adventure in the afternoon. This weekend I will be heading out Friday around four pm. Several summer staff are going to the Booser’s house for a pool party and a cookout. Tricia Booser was a counselor last year and she and her family has invited us to spend the weekend friday and sat with them. I am looking forward to this.
This week most of the LIT’s are leaving to go back home. Next week will also be our last week of camp. I’m looking forward to it but not the summer staff leaving.
So we are gearing up for another week of camp. For the most part my responsibilities will be helping the rock and water class in the mornings this week. Then in the afternoons of MWF be in charge of driving the jet ski down to the lake and be responsibile for them. Then in the afternoons of T and Thursday work the high ropes course or rock climbing. Then on thursday evening I would be running firecircle media things. After this week there will only be one more week of camp, then it will be tough saying good bye to the summer staff at the begining of Aug. I did find out that this summer’s celebration party at the end of the summer is also on my Birthday, so that will be sweet.
This morning I went to Central Chrisitan and heard Keith Phillips speak. Keith is the Founder of World Impact, the urban ministry that THE OAKS is a part of. Things are still looking well here. I’ll check back later this week.
I’m getting settled in here at THE OAKS. I got here last monday around 4:30pm Pacific time after driving solid from 5am central time. I was so earger to get the han solo drive over. I had made a data CD of music for the drive. It had 160 some songs on it. But after a while it got old so when I stopped at wal-mart I got the Cold Play CD (Thanks for the suggession darren.) It will still take some time for it to settle in that I am in California to stay. It will hit me harder once the summer staff leaves.
My role at the camp for the summer is helping out where needed in the areas of lifeguarding, rock climbing, and media. It has been difficult getting into the swing of things with all the summer staff being in the middle of summer and I just getting here a week ago, but slowly but surly I am getting know some people here at the camp and find my fit with my job. This summer is defintly different than last summer, I am finding my self having to grow up and be more responsible. Being more responsible doesn’t mean that I can’t joke around it just means more of a servants heart is needed. When I graduated Taylor I recieved a servant towel, I am reminded of that daily when I work. I’m not complaining, there is actually great joy in the work that I am doing. I feel loved and appriciated. People at the camp said that it wasn’t the same without me.
This next week is my first full week of working, I will be at the lake in the afternoon’s switching between the boat and lakefront lifeguarding. Then tommorrow morning I will be helping out with Dan P.’s rock and water class. He’s a great guy to be around.
Oh I almost forgot. This last weekend was a blast. One of the guys found in the paper something about Rosie’s 90th birthday party at the Rock Inn. So some of us decided to check it out. The Rock Inn is a Biker Bar/ Resturant in Lake Hughes, CA. Me and some of the guys ended up eating there and then Rosie walked over to our table and the waitress told her that we saw the article in the paper and decided to come and celebrate her 90th birthday. Rosie told us that we just wanted to see what a 90 year old woman looked like. We all laughed. It was great to see someone that old still functioning pretty well. We were able to get a picture with Rosie. I asked Rosie if that the 90’s were the new 80’s and she laughed and said yes.
I look forward to more adventures here at the OAKS and with the staff.

I send you all my love, and thanks for your prayers. I feel God’s blessing and guidence here at THE OAKS and feels that it is his plan for me right now.
I have moved into the lodges and slowly getting adjusted to California and the Camp. It has been a little difficult with everyone already knowing everyone and me comming in the middle of the summer with everyone in top gear. But the last two days I have been teaching swimming lessons. Today in a little bit I will be helping with the zipline. The staff is great and I have missed my family which I feel very fortunate to have had a 4th like the one I just had. Sorry I have been slow to update. Thanks for all of your prayers.
I stoped to get Gas in Tucumcari, New Mexico it is 9:38pm Mountain Time so 11:38pm Indiana Time. My plan is to get to Albuquerque which is 177 miles from here. So the reason I posted now is because by then I might be too tired to post and or there might not be a hotel where I get tired. So If I am feeling well I’ll drive past Albuq. and then stop when I get tired. It has been a good trip so far. There was a semi tire that came rolling from the other direction of traffic. The only thing I could think of it was a spare that got away. But it wasn’t until the tire rolled past my vehicle did I realize that it would have done some damage to the vehicle because those tires are heavy. Well hey I have to go. But I’m and good spirits and Continue to pray for my journey. God Bless and Keep me Safe.
